INTERNATIONAL WORKSHOP ON COMBATING DESERTIFICATION

Arid, semi-arid, marginal, and saline environments are mostly vulnerable to climate change. The growing population coupled with climate change is exerting more pressure on limited natural resources in these regions. Land degradation and subsequent desertification are becoming the most important developmental challenges in these areas. The Ministry of Environment, Water and Agriculture (MEWA) of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia collaboration with the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) has organized an “International Workshop on Combating Desertification and Arid Lands Management Innovations” by inviting international experts to analyze and present the global scenario and share their experiences, with emphasis on desert and arid environments. The workshop sessions will be aimed at learning from both theoretical and practical approaches geared towards combatting desertification, identifying common challenges, best practices and future prospects. The workshop will have the four dedicated thematic areas.

• Combating Desertification in Arid-Lands

• Sustainable Management and Rehabilitation of Arid and Hyper-Arid Rangelands and Forests

• Innovations in Saline Environments Management and Use of Renewable Resources

• Impact of Climate Change and Desertification on Arid Lands

There is great interest from local and international authorities and professionals to actively participate in this workshop and a number of high-level experts and keynote speakers have already confirmed participation.

Exhibition

EXHIBITION AND TECHNOLOGY FAIR The Exhibition and Technology Fair Space is established as a central location from where exhibitors will present and demonstrate their innovations, brief guests, and participate in discussions and one-on-one interviews. The aim of the Technology Fair is to demonstrate a variety of innovative, unique, efficient and effective technologies that can be used to ensure sustainable land and water management approaches geared towards combatting desertification. It will offer workshop attendees with an opportunity to see the latest and most effective technology and innovation in action. And it will facilitate contact and interaction among land managers, policy makers, academic/research institutions and the private sector on available technologies. The Fair is designed to be a meeting space to promote the best sustainability technologies and will reinforce the importance of developing and disseminating appropriate technology. It will help create a new entry point for greater and stronger partnerships in particular with private sector enterprises. It will help demonstrate how technology and its transfer can play more substantive roles in improving sustainability. It is free to participate in the Exhibition/Technology fair while space allocation for exhibitors is on a “first-come, first-served” basis.
